SATURDAY 20th APRIL 2013

A SPECIAL EXCURSION TRAIN TO BATH, DORCHESTER & WEYMOUTH

via

THE HEART OF WESSEX LINE

The Wessex Express preparing to depart Weymouth on 21st April.  (C. Mackintosh)

The day dawned bright, and the sun never left us until dusk. It was such a contrast to the wet and miserable spring that both preceded and followed our chosen date. The train was presented to us in fine order, the first class section being particularly warm, comfortable and welcoming. Operationally the whole thing was faultless, with on time running all day.

The complexity of such an operation is often overlooked, but fitting in the train across the complex junctions outside Bristol, across the West of England line and along the single line to Dorchester all went without a hitch. The list of platform alterations at Weymouth just to allow us to use the long platform and to back out to run round had to be seen to be believed.

We owe thanks to Riviera Trains (train hire company), DB Schenker (train operator), and Network Rail (train planning). Certainly we received a large number of complimentary comments on the way back, which is extremely pleasing. Thanks also to all those club members who helped in the planning and on the day; it really was a team effort.

Next year (2014) Easter is late, which is why the date of Saturday 26th April 2014 has been chosen the next railtour - definitely one for your diaries.
